The Heart and Soul of Habitat
Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization. Each week we may have a corporate group of volunteers working on a construction home, civic or church groups or other individual volunteers working at the ReStore arranging and pricing merchandise, and other volunteers during the week working in the administration office. There is always important and meaningful tasks for our volunteers to do, and we’d love to have you join us!

Guidelines and Age Restrictions
for Habitat Volunteers
These youth are too young to volunteer and are NOT allowed on a construction worksite for safety reasons.
Youth Under 14
Can landscape, paint, lot clean, and volunteer in the ReStore.
Cannot use power tools or work from a height over 6 feet, or other ultra-hazardous tasks.
Must have a parent or guardian with them on all tasks.
Youth 14-17
Youth 17+
Can volunteer in ReStore or on a build site after completing orientation with a parent.

Orientation & Waivers
Before being allowed to volunteer with Habitat, all volunteers
must complete an orientation and have signed waivers submitted.
(When you complete the registration form in the next section, you will automatically be
prompted to complete the waiver and will receive information about orientation.)
Volunteer Positions
Although the volunteer needs that Habitat Collin County has will vary from week to week, there are several opportunities that we frequently need help with. Plus, if you are not able or interested in using a hammer, Habitat may still be the place for you to serve!

Every Habitat family is given a mentor to help them through the Habitat culture and program expectations. Mentors also support the family with advice and suggestions and help them stay on track until the family has moved into their home. After the family closes on the home, the mentors will continue their relationship with the family to encourage and advise on home maintenance and other household questions homeowners have.

Having a site host on each construction project allows our construction crew, crew chiefs, and volunteers to stay focused on the day’s tasks at hand. The site host helps check in the volunteer crew, schedules hydration breaks (especially valuable in the heat of summer), hands out band-aids :-), and helps distribute lunches to all the crew and volunteers. We ask our site hosts to arrive 15 minutes early and be able to stay until we say goodbye to our volunteer crew.

House leaders are important construction leaders on the job sites. These individuals are skilled in construction know-how and have undergone the training necessary to lead volunteer crews on home construction job sites. These dedicated individuals are on-site for each build day on their assigned home.

Habitat has built a reputation of forming strong teams of volunteers to build a home. We are scheduling crews for various tasks throughout the construction process and repair projects. Working on Habitat job sites will get you skills you can’t get just anywhere. We will teach you what you need to know and bring all the tools with us.

Habitat is always looking for hands to help, even if our need is answering phones, filing, researching or data analysis. Lend your God-given skills to Habitat and we will put you to work!
Community service hours or restitution
If you have been sentenced by the court to perform community service, you may meet our requirements to volunteer on job sites or at the ReStore. Anyone interested in volunteering at Habitat to fulfill their community service hours must first contact our volunteer coordinator in person before they will be allowed to register.

Important information regarding hours served
Community Service volunteers only receive credit for hours personally worked. No one other than the Community Service Volunteer can complete hours for credit. Each individual is responsible for bringing any paperwork with them required by the court, as well as signing in at our volunteer work site. It is your responsibility to make sure you clock in and clock out to get full credit for all hours served. (We will not sign off on any forms where the hours served are incomplete or in question).

Yes, only if they are age-eligible and have also registered to volunteer with Habitat.

If you have signed up to volunteer outside and aren’t sure about the schedule due to the weather, call or email our volunteer coordinator to confirm.

We provide all registered volunteers with a sack lunch if the schedule goes into the afternoon. If you have dietary restrictions, then yes, we recommend you bring your own food. We always provide a cooler on the job site filled with donated water and Gatorade.

There is no financial commitment for volunteering, just a commitment of your time!

Yes, we have a special log-in procedure that you can sign in on and sign your group up for a block of time to volunteer, either at our McKinney ReStore or on a construction job site.

When you sign up for a volunteer opportunity, the time is listed per shift and varies depending on the scope of the project you will be volunteering for.

NO, we determine in advance what safe amount of volunteers we need on a day-by-day basis and cannot make exceptions. We also need everyone to register in advance of any volunteer opportunity.
