Meet Jamie Monestero
New Wylie Homeowner
QUIET AND PEACEFUL
My name is Jamie Monestero, and I am so blessed to be a part of the Habitat for Humanity family. Before we moved into our new Habitat home, we lived in a one-bedroom apartment in Allen with my three daughters Kitana(5), Destiny(11), and Deja(15), and our chihuahua named Bella. It has been a long, hard road trying to pay and afford all the bills over the past several years. As a full-time school bus driver in Prosper and part-time at Cabela’s after my bus driving shift, I work two jobs. Despite having two jobs, after taking care of my family’s needs and paying the bills, there just doesn’t seem to be anything left to get ahead. I found out about Habitat for Humanity through a friend who encouraged me to apply. After the application process and the evaluation, I was thrilled when I found out I qualified. I have been taking classes to be prepared to be a homeowner and have been putting in sweat equity, along with my oldest daughter, to qualify for a house. In February, I finally got to choose a house in Wylie!
My new house is a modest four-bedroom house in a quiet neighborhood. I have worked alongside Habitat for Humanity volunteers to get this house in livable shape and am looking forward to settling into my own house. Each girl will now have her own room and can create her individual special place. They are already working on ideas from simple to extravagant to make the space their own. Having the freedom to decorate this house as I want, knowing that I am here for the long term, is also a huge blessing. My parents, who live in west Texas, will stay here when they visit, and our dog Bella will now have a backyard to run around in. I also look forward to not having to work two jobs anymore and seeing my kids more than I have been able to. Not having to stress or worry about what I can afford or living paycheck to paycheck will be a wonderful relief.
The thing that most impressed me about the house when I first saw it was the quiet and peaceful environment. I can feel more confident letting my girls play outside, hoping they will make friends in the neighborhood. I am also looking forward to spending time with the girls reading or watching tv in our new space. Once we have settled down and have developed a family routine, I may pursue a career in the medical field, which should always be in demand.
We all thank God for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and for the Habitat family supporting us in this tough time. Thank you so much for all you have done for us. We are truly blessed!
