A Navy Veteran’s Story

My name is Marion McFarland and I’m a proud 8-year Navy veteran. I was born in Monroe but raised in Rayville, Louisiana. Although I haven’t received my degree, I have studied at multiple colleges to further my education in the medical field. I attended one class at sea, Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, VA (RN), Platt College in Dallas, Texas (Pharmacy Technician), and Kaplan College in Dallas, TX (MA) to name a few. Shortly, I would like to acquire funding to finish my nursing degree. I have a big heart and enjoy helping others.

I have been blessed with three incredible children: two sons, Xavier and Leandro, and a daughter, Yesenia. My boys love sports and have participated in football, wrestling, and track. My daughter graduated from high school in 2020 and went on to college, majoring in business. The kids love their schools and are eager for knowledge. We have two additional very playful family members: Bentley and Zeus, our husky and blue nose pit.

We have moved multiple times throughout the years, but love calling Texas home now. We took up shelter with one of my sisters in Dallas for a short period and struggled to find a stable home for years. We even lived in our SUV for a short time before I found a job and settled down in our apartment in Plano. My now-late grandma, may she rest in peace in Heaven, came to Texas with my mom and baby sister after my grandma was discharged from rehab after a stoke. We lived in separate motel rooms for many years. We decided to get a place together but couldn’t find an apartment to fit us. Now knowing where we’d wind up, we prayed continuously, “Lord, I don’t know how or where we are going to prosper. But we know that you didn’t bring us this far to leave us. You wouldn’t put anything on us that we can’t bear.”

Now we have a tremendous opportunity through Habitat for Humanity. We are grateful for this organization that’s given us a chance to stay together now as a combined family (McFarland-Gayle). This is the opportunity we have been waiting and praying about for decades. Look at God; He made a way for us. We believed, and now, we are receiving His blessings, according to his riches and glory. Amen!
